Yesterday (literally yesterday) the economy was improving. The sun was shining. The birds were singing. Happy days were here again. Throw some confetti in the air and lets celebrate our vibrant economy.

There’s a gradual acceleration underway in the economy,” said Michael Englund, chief economist at Action Economics.

“Today’s claims data and confidence reading put a positive spin going into tomorrow’s payroll report,” he said, projecting 210,000 jobs were created in March.

24 hours later the sun is no longer shining. The birds are dead. The confetti is all over the street and nobody wants to sweep up the mess.

Job growth slowed to a slog last month and more workers dropped out of the labor market in a setback for the economic recovery and the momentum that President Obama had built recently from improving employment numbers. Employers nationwide added a weak 120,000 new positions in March, the government reported Friday, only about half of the job gains in each of the prior three months. Some of the slowdown was seen as a payback for inflated payrolls in the winter related to unusually mild weather.
